O2 has the property of paramagnetism, which results in its being attracted toward a magnetic field. Several types of instruments have been designed to use this property of O2 to measure the PO2 in a mixture of gases ( Fig. 36-13 ). Paramagnetic sensors are commonly used for exhaled O2 analysis in clinical monitors.
