Because in the Clark electrode the electrolyte solution is contained within a gas-permeable membrane, the electrode can be used for PO2 measurement in gaseous-O2 mixtures. Polarographic O2 analyzers have a slow response time and are not useful for rapid-response expired gas analysis. However, their low cost and mechanical sturdiness make them suitable for on-line inspired gas analysis in anesthesia or intensive care ventilator circuits.
