SUMMARY
One of the fastest changing aspects of health care is the growing
public and scientific interest in CAM. When taken preoperatively, some herbal medicines
may adversely affect patient care. Surgery and anesthesia can usually proceed safely
if potential complications are predicted and can be avoided. Preliminary data suggest
that acupuncture and music may be useful adjuncts in the perioperative period. Although
medical schools are beginning to incorporate CAM into their curriculums, it is difficult
but important for anesthesiologists in practice to stay informed about these practices.
