Responses to Carbon Dioxide
Changes in ventilation secondary to alterations in arterial carbon
dioxide tension are mediated principally at the level of the medulla. Patients whose
peripheral
chemoreceptors have been denervated by bilateral carotid endarterectomy demonstrate
a modestly attenuated increase in ventilation in response to inhaled carbon dioxide.
