The modern anesthetist expeditiously develops and then sustains
a brain anesthetic concentration sufficient for surgery with agents and techniques
that usually permit a rapid recovery from anesthesia. Producing an adequate concentration
for surgery requires sufficient but not excessive anesthetic delivery. Knowledge
of the factors that govern the relationship between the delivered and brain, heart,
or muscle concentrations allows optimal conduct of anesthesia.
