Within the broad rubric of statistics, several distinct and valuable areas can be viewed separately. "Descriptive statistics" is the use of mathematical methods to describe or categorize a collection of data that result from a set of empirical observations. "Statistical testing" is the broad approach to the determination of conclusions from a set of observations. Within each of these categories are many separate techniques.
