The ability of vasodilator prostaglandins to counteract the vasoconstrictor effects of norepinephrine and angiotensin and to maintain inner cortical perfusion has led to considerable research on their renal protective effects. Exogenous infusion of synthetic prostaglandins such as PGE1 prevents ischemia-induced acute renal failure in animals and may have a role in preservation of the donor kidney in renal transplantation.[80]
