Chapter 6
- Pulmonary Pharmacology
- Neil E. Farber
- Paul S. Pagel
- David C. Warltier
This chapter describes the physiologic control mechanisms involved
in modulating various anatomic components of the lungs and the direct effects of
inhaled anesthetics on pulmonary physiology. The lungs are unique in their exposure
to a wide variety of physical forces, including ventilation, blood flow, and surface
tension. Inhaled anesthetics modulate each of these properties. Specific sections
of this chapter focus on airway and PVR, mucociliary function, and ventilatory control.
