A colloid solution of 25% ("salt-poor") albumin contains purified albumin at five times the normal concentration. When administered, it has the potential to expand the plasma volume by up to five times the volume provided. It is selected when the current plasma volume is diminished, but blood pressure is acceptable, and the total ECF volume is expanded.
